Paid Sick Leave Makes Sense

By Michael Winterfield
Hartford Courant

"I testified in support of paid sick days as a retired insurance company actuary and business executive.

Paid sick days are an important health care benefit. They also make good business sense. The Institute for Women's Policy Research studies show that the gross costs will be minor — and these costs will be offset by increased productivity, less contagion of fellow workers and by greater employee retention. I was accordingly disappointed in The Courant's March 3 editorial "Business-Friendly? No." The Connecticut Business and Industry Association and its consultants have grossly exaggerated the potential costs."
