The panel will feature the perspectives of leaders from three of the promising approaches highlighted in the report and leading advocates for teen parents and the programs working to assist them.

Access to high-quality early care and education (ECE) can have critical multi-generational benefits. It improves children's social and cognitive outcomes and enhances parents' ability to fulfill their educational and career ambitions, and provide economic security for their families. College students with children are often single parents, and are more likely than other students to be first generation college students and to have low-incomes. The stakes are high for these students and the families they support.

This webinar highlighted a variety of federal, state, and local funding sources that can, and have been, harnessed to launch and maintain child care resources for college students. It shared findings from a toolkit on financing child care for students with children, by IWPR and the National Coalition of Campus Children's Centers.

Topics included:

The role of early childhood education in student parent success, and how it might be better integrated into postsecondary education systems.

Real-world examples of federal, state, and local funding sources that have been used to fund child care for student parents; and

Perspectives on fundraising from campus early care and education professionals.

More than 11 million American children spend time in non-parental care each day. Millions of families rely on some aspect of America's publicly funded programs for their children as they go to work. Most are looking for a high-quality setting in which their children can learn. Yet, current situations fail too many families. The cost of care is too high while salaries for staff are too low. There are gaps in the regulatory oversight and in the quality of care, and there is too little learning for too many children. Moreover, the fiscal pressures on states and the federal government are preventing investments of public support.

Student parents face the additional challenges of balancing family, work, and school obligations, supporting their children financially and obtaining quality, reliable child care arrangements to cover the hours they attend school, study, and work.

There is growing recognition that traditional student support services and financial aid are not always sufficient to enable these students to make ends meet as they pursue degrees and credentials, a reality that may be reflected in the lower levels of retention and completion than their non-parent counterparts. However, a number of institutions and their partners are exploring ways economic support programs, such as food stamps, refundable tax credits and cash assistance, can help students make ends meet.

The distinguished speakers listed below are experts well-versed in implementing models of integrated service delivery on their respective community college campuses. Audience members will have the opportunity to submit questions to be answered by the panelists near the end of the event.

Speakers include:
