The Institute for Women's Policy Research conducts rigorous research and disseminates its findings to address the needs of women, promote public dialogue, and strengthen families, communities, and societies. IWPR focuses on issues of poverty and welfare, employment and earnings, work and family issues, health and safety, and women's civic and political participation.

The Institute works with policymakers, scholars, and public interest groups around the country to design, execute, and disseminate research that illuminates economics and social policy issues affecting women and families, and to build a network of individuals and organizations that conduct and use women-oriented policy research. IWPR, an independent, non-profit, research organization also works in affiliation with the graduate programs in public policy and women's studies at The George Washington University.

IWPR's work is supported by foundation grants, government grants and contracts, donations from individuals, and contributions from organizations. Members and affiliates of IWPR's Information Network receive reports and information on a regular basis. IWPR is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

Internships

IWPR's internship program is designed to provide participants with challenging work experiences under the guidance and supervision of researchers with extensive knowledge of women's policy issues and social science research.

Fall 2010 & Spring 2011 Internships

The Institute will offer internships in four areas for the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters:

Research Internship. Interns will provide administrative and research support to researchers. Duties include: literature reviews; assisting with data collection; designing charts, graphs, and tables; answering phones; and filing. Qualifications: Strong organizational skills; good interpersonal skills; interest in policy research and women's issues; and experience with statistics, economics, or social sciences through coursework. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel required; knowledge of STATA, SPSS, SAS, and graphics software a plus.

Communications and Outreach Internship. Interns will provide administrative and editorial support to the communications team. Duties include: assisting with proofreading; article clipping; assisting with media outreach; layout and design of Fact Sheets and Research-In-Briefs; and IWPR website maintenance as needed. Qualifications: Detail-oriented individual with good writing and computer skills; knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Quark Xpress, or other desktop publishing software preferred; familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel required; layout and web design experience with programs such as Microsoft Front Page or Macromedia Dreamweaver a plus.

Development Internship. Interns will provide administrative and grant research support to the development team and will have the opportunity to learn about nonprofit fundraising, grant applications, and direct mail programs. IWPR receives support from foundations and government agencies, as well as individual and organizational supporters. Duties include: assisting with direct mail, data entry, grant research, grant-writing, and fundraising. Qualifications: Should have an interest in fundraising and nonprofit management; prior experience with fundraising at any level is desirable, but not required; familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel required; and knowledge of Salesforce preferred.

Administrative Internship. Interns will provide administrative support to the Finance Manager. Duties include: expense allocations, accounts payable tasks, data entry; filing; copying; and tracking and organizing financial records as well as assistance in comparing vendor proposals for phone and internet plans.  Qualifications: Strong organizational skills; good interpersonal skills; experience with or interest in nonprofit accounting, and office administration through coursework or previous internships. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel required; knowledge of Quickbooks or other accounting software a plus.

All IWPR interns must have good computer skills, excellent writing and communication skills, and an interest in women's issues. Prior office experience is desirable, as interns are responsible for a certain amount of general office work, such as photocopying, answering phones, filing, and maintaining the library.

  • Increasing access to higher education and non-traditional jobs for low-income women.
  • Expanding access to income supports for women such as Unemployment Insurance and Family Leave.
  • Strategies for improving child care access, affordability, and quality.
  • Older women's economic issues, including social security and pensions.
  • Women’s civic activism and new strategies for engaging a diverse range of organizations in activism on women's issues.
  • The economic status of women and girls, women of color, and immigrant women across the United States.

Fellowships

The Mariam K. Chamberlain Fellowship in Women & Public Policy

IWPR will offer one fellowship for 2010-2011:

The Mariam K. Chamberlain Fellow works as a general research assistant on a variety of research projects and reports.  Research tasks may include reviewing literature; collecting, checking and analyzing data; gathering information; and preparing reports and report graphics. Attending relevant Congressional briefings, policy seminars and meetings is also an integral part of the fellowship program.  Applicants should have at least a bachelor's degree in a social science discipline, statistics, or women's studies.  Graduate work is not required.  Applicants should have strong quantitative and library research skills and knowledge of women's issues; familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel is required.  Knowledge of STATA, SPSS, SAS, and graphics software a plus. Qualitative research skills also a plus.

Communications Fellow

We are also currently seeking a Communications Manager.

The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) seeks an energetic, creative and resourceful Communications Fellow to serve as a general communications assistant on a variety of communications and outreach activities including press relations, print and online products, and dissemination of IWPR products.  The Communications Fellow will work with the Communications Manager in coordination with other IWPR staff to assist with the carrying out of all communications responsibilities, and in its effort to improve conditions for women by sharing its information with a growing audience of advocates, policy makers, thought leaders, and members of the public. The Communications Fellow will report to the Communications Manager.

Communications Responsibilities Include:


Media Relations

  • Contribute to  press releases/media advisories and distribute to press lists including Business Newswire
  • Assist with press conferences/events
  • Field press calls and track media contact information and press hits

Events assistance

  • Assist with planning, coordination, and publicizing of events and staff speaking engagement
  • Disseminate information at IWPR events and  capture and share information from events, through photography, video, and web dissemination 

Targeted Outreach

  • Prepare and send informational materials for press, policy makers, partner organizations, and other target audiences
  • Help identify potential new audiences for communication available to IWPR that suit our work and mission

The IWPR/GW Fellowship in Women's Public Policy Research 2010-2011

The recipient of this fellowship will participate in research at the Institute for Women's Policy Research during the fellowship year, while enrolled as a full-time graduate student at The George Washington University.

Awards: 
This fellowship provides a stipend of $15,000 plus $1,000 toward the cost of health insurance and 18 hours of tuition credit at The George Washington University. 

Eligibility: 
Preference will be given to advanced graduate students, particularly to students in the Gender and Social Policy field of the Public Policy & Public Administration PhD program, or the MA in Public Policy with a Concentration in Women’s Studies, whose interests and background relate to IWPR research interests. Current or previous fellows may reapply once.

Students must be enrolled full time (9 credits per semester) during the fellowship year.

Relationship between research and course work: 
Students may arrange to use their time at IWPR as a field placement for WSTU 283 Practicum in Women’s Studies, and/or to use their research at IWPR as the basis for an independent research (WSTU 295) or independent study (WSTU 280) paper or a thesis. Such arrangements require faculty approval.

Staff Positions

Communications Manager

We are also currently seeking a Communications Fellow.

Qualifications
Applicants should have at least a bachelor's degree and five years experience (which may include graduate work) in communications/public relations, marketing, media, journalism, or related disciplines. Graduate work is not required. Expertise in Microsoft Word and Excel is required. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, website maintenance, organizing events, and professional experience with online social networking and digital media is strongly preferred. Applicants should have strong writing and editing skills; knowledge of publication production process; knowledge of women's issues and public policy making; strong interpersonal skills; ability to manage multiple priorities. Compensation
The salary range for the Communications Manager is from the mid 40s to the low 50s commensurate with expertise and experience. Outreach and Policy Associate

The Institute for Women’s Policy Research seeks an Outreach and Policy Associate for a new networking and research project focused on improving policy and programmatic supports for low-income parents seeking postsecondary education. 

In addition to producing and commissioning research on student-parent postsecondary success, the project staff will create a national network of researchers, advocates, administrators, practitioners, and other stakeholders interested in postsecondary success for student parents.  Network activities will include convenings and events, strategic meetings with policy makers, and online information dissemination to increase awareness of the importance of student-parent supports and to build commitment for increased investments among policymakers, advocates, and others.  Research briefs and reports associated with the project will address policies and practices that encourage postsecondary success and completion, as well as toolkits for administrators and practitioners to for designing and expanding student parent supports. 

The project is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as a part of its Postsecondary Success Initiative.

The Outreach and Policy Associate will be responsible for developing, maintaining and expanding the student parent support network and coordinating network activities, including public events, strategic meetings, and online information dissemination. The Associate will also contribute to planning research projects, outreach to commissioned researchers, and to writing policy analysis as needed and appropriate. The Associate will report to the Project Director and will work in collaboration with IWPR’s research and communications staff.

The Outreach and Policy Associate position will be half time, with additional hours required on occasion.  The position will require occasional travel.

Associate Responsibilities Include:

Network Building and Information Sharing

  • Organize a national network of researchers, advocates, practitioners, and stakeholders representing a variety of backgrounds and agendas
  • Work with communications staff and contractors to create and maintain networking and communications tools (e.g. network website, social media, email lists)
  • Communicate news and updates with network members and the public and reach out to new network members
  • Plan strategic meetings with administrators, policymakers, and advocates in a position to promote student parent supports
  • Plan public events, convene network members and information-sharing events in person, by phone, and by internet
  • Deliver presentations on methods for improving student parent supports and provide technical assistance to practitioners and administrators

Policy Analysis and Research

  •  Track policies associated with postsecondary education access and supports for low-income individuals including TANF, WIA, and higher education, and child care policy
  • Develop expertise on student-parent support programs to serve as a resource for network members and the public
  • Contribute to policy briefs and/or research reports

Qualifications"

Candidate should possess a bachelor’s or Masters degree in a social science discipline, communications, public policy, or social work; be familiar with policies connected to education and supports for low-income parents and children; have at least three years experience in outreach, organizing, event-planning, coalition-building, and/or public relations; outstanding personal communication and speaking skills; excellent organizational skills; and a strong interest in women’s issues.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical insurance with employer contribution,group dental plan,403(b)retirement plan with employer match, transportation subsidy, vacation and personal leave, paid holidays and sick leave.
